Tony Rapu, in his weekly series tagged “My Lagos Diaries,” shares the story of Magdalene whom he went in search of at a brothel.
Magdalene, who had began going to church, still lived in the brothel and worked as a sex worker to earn a living.
News later came through that Magdalene, who was on the waiting list for a shelter for former sex workers in Alpha Beach, had died, and Pastor Rapu went to investigate.
He shared a video of himself at the brothel, writing:
Magdalene had begun to come to church but still lived and worked in a brothel in Badia. She had relocated to Lagos looking for a better life but got caught up in prostitution trying to make ends meet.
When we heard Magdalene had died, we went to investigate at the brothel. We heard conflicting reports of what could have happened to her. Meanwhile, Magdalene was on the waiting list for a room at Genesis House, our shelter in Alpha Beach for ex commercial sex workers. And while we were there we saw very young boys coming in to engage the services of the sex workers.
