The Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State is currently facing heavy criticism online after reportedly declaring a three day prayer and fasting programme following the recent school attack and abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area.
The backlash intensified after many Nigerians accused the union of allegedly sounding defensive of government efforts instead of demanding stronger action over the worsening insecurity affecting schools and teachers.
Social media users expressed frustration after reports and statements linked to the situation began circulating online, with many arguing that teachers and students need protection, not just spiritual exercises.
The outrage became even stronger following reports that an abducted teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was allegedly killed during the attack, while several pupils and teachers were still reportedly missing.
Critics online questioned why stronger pressure was not being placed on authorities through protests, shutdowns, or direct demands for urgent security reforms. Others said the situation reflects how insecurity in Nigeria is gradually becoming normalized.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also reacted publicly, criticizing the prayer and fasting move while accusing the union of allegedly making excuses for the government instead of forcefully demanding accountability and protection for teachers.
Meanwhile, some people defended the decision, insisting that prayer remains important during moments of fear and national crisis, especially after traumatic incidents involving children and schools.
The incident itself has continued generating nationwide outrage after gunmen reportedly invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting pupils, students, and teachers in coordinated attacks that left many parents terrified.
