David Green, the Christian businessman and founder of Hobby Lobby, has spoken about his belief that the multibillion-dollar company he built does not ultimately belong to him but to God.
Green, who started his business journey in 1970 with a $600 loan and a small picture-framing operation in his garage, went on to build Hobby Lobby into one of America’s major arts and crafts retail chains, with more than 1,000 stores across the United States.
Despite his financial success, Green has consistently maintained that wealth should be viewed as a responsibility rather than simply a personal possession.
Drawing inspiration from Psalm 24:1, which declares that the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord, the businessman has explained that he considers himself a steward of the resources entrusted to him.
As part of his approach to Christian stewardship, Green and his family transferred the company’s voting stock into a trust, a decision intended to protect the business’s long-term mission and values.
The move reflected his belief that the company should continue supporting Christian causes beyond his lifetime.
According to the account, Hobby Lobby also directs a significant portion of its profits towards Christian ministries, Bible translation efforts and church-planting initiatives around the world.
Green’s philosophy challenges the conventional idea that business success should be measured primarily by personal wealth.
For him, the greater purpose of building a successful company is to use its resources to support the spread of the Gospel.
His story raises an important conversation about faith, wealth and the responsibility Christian business owners believe they have towards God and society.
