Pastor Mensa Otabil has challenged women who make a man’s wealth the major requirement for marriage to also consider what they are building for themselves.
“As for me, I want to marry a rich man,” he quoted, before asking:
“By inference, are you saying you cannot be rich by yourself?”
He humorously added:
“If the man doesn’t have money, you don’t have time for him, but you have time for yourself, your broke self.”
His message was not that financial stability is unimportant in choosing a spouse.
Rather, he challenged the idea that marriage should become a woman’s primary escape route from financial struggle.
He also criticised narratives that portray a struggling woman as waiting for a wealthy man to suddenly appear and transform her entire life.
Marriage can bring partnership, but every individual should also develop their own gifts, capacity and sense of responsibility.
