American soldier Sergeant First Class Alwyn C. Cashe demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness when he repeatedly entered a burning military vehicle to rescue fellow soldiers during the Iraq War.
On October 17, 2005, near Samarra, Iraq, Cashe’s Bradley Fighting Vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED), causing the vehicle to catch fire.
Although Cashe initially escaped, he refused to abandon the soldiers trapped inside.
Despite being covered in fuel and suffering severe burns, he repeatedly returned to the burning vehicle to pull his fellow soldiers to safety.
Cashe continued his rescue efforts even as his uniform caught fire and his injuries became increasingly severe.
He suffered burns over approximately 72% of his body and died on November 8, 2005, from his injuries.
His extraordinary bravery was recognised when he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in December 2021, America’s highest military decoration for bravery in combat.
His story remains a powerful example of courage, sacrifice and putting the lives of others before one’s own.
For Christians, his actions bring to mind the words of Jesus in John 15:13:
