American gospel singer, songwriter, and worship leader Jonathan McReynolds delivers a deeply reflective and emotionally honest message in “PEOPLE.” Released in February 2020, the song serves as the lead single from his PEOPLE EP, a project that explores faith, grace, personal struggles, and the complexities of human relationships.
At its heart, “PEOPLE” addresses the emotional pain that can come from giving others too much influence over our thoughts, feelings, and sense of identity. The song reflects on how easily people’s opinions and actions can affect us, sometimes leaving wounds that are difficult to overcome. However, its message goes beyond blaming others. It also challenges listeners to recognise that everyone has weaknesses and can unintentionally hurt someone else.
Jonathan McReynolds explains that the song is not simply about the people who hurt us, but about the power we allow them to have in our minds. It highlights our shared need for God’s perspective and grace, reminding us that we cannot demand mercy for ourselves while refusing to extend it to others.
With its soulful sound, honest songwriting, and thought-provoking message, “PEOPLE” encourages listeners to release the burden of human approval, seek healing from God, and become more gracious towards others. It is a reminder that while people may disappoint us, our identity and worth should ultimately be rooted in what God says about us.
