Irish Christian teacher Enoch Burke remains at the centre of a prolonged legal dispute involving religious beliefs, school policies and repeated court orders.

Burke has reportedly spent more than 700 days in prison across multiple periods of detention since September 2022.

The controversy began after he objected to a school instruction concerning a student’s preferred name and they/them pronouns, arguing that complying would conflict with his Christian convictions.

Following his suspension and subsequent dismissal from Wilson’s Hospital School in Ireland, Burke continued appearing on school premises despite court orders restricting his access.

Although the dispute originated from his objections to the school’s policy, Irish courts have maintained that his imprisonment resulted from repeated breaches of court orders rather than his religious beliefs or refusal to use particular pronouns.

On July 1, 2026, the High Court reportedly ordered his release, citing changes in circumstances surrounding his employment and the conclusion of the school year.

However, the legal proceedings continued after allegations that Burke returned to the school grounds.

In October 2026, a judge ordered his arrest, but on October 29, the court reportedly narrowed the order, making arrest conditional on his returning to the school.

Burke has continued to maintain that his Christian convictions are central to his position.

The case has generated debate about religious freedom, individual conscience, school responsibilities and the legal consequences of disobeying court orders.
