Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has publicly defended his country’s Christian heritage, arguing that Christian values and religious symbols remain an important part of Poland’s national identity.

Nawrocki, who assumed office in August 2025, expressed these views during his presidential campaign, particularly while addressing debates over the display of crucifixes in public institutions.

Speaking at a campaign event in January 2025, he criticised efforts he believed were aimed at removing Christian symbols from government offices, arguing that such actions risk distancing Poland from its historical roots.

He also expressed support for a Poland firmly grounded in Christian values while remaining open to people of different religious beliefs and convictions.

His position reflects the significant role Christianity has played in Polish history for more than a thousand years.

in 966 AD, the baptism of Duke Mieszko I marked a defining moment in Poland’s Christianisation, helping establish Christianity as a major influence on the country’s culture, traditions and national development.

Throughout the centuries, Christian institutions have played important roles in Polish society, including during periods of foreign occupation and communist rule.

Poland is also the birthplace of Pope John Paul II, whose leadership became closely associated with religious freedom and opposition to communist authoritarianism in Eastern Europe.

Historic religious landmarks, including the Jasna Góra monastery and numerous churches across Kraków, continue to reflect the country’s deep Christian heritage.

However, the place of religious symbols in government institutions remains a subject of public debate, with supporters emphasising historical identity and critics raising questions about religious neutrality and inclusion.

For Nawrocki, preserving Christian values is closely connected to maintaining Poland’s cultural and historical identity.

His remarks highlight the continuing discussion about the relationship between Christianity, national heritage and public life in modern Poland.
