The Nigerian gospel music community has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran gospel minister and songwriter, Toun Soetan, popularly known as Evangelist Shouet.
The respected gospel icon reportedly passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the age of 73, leaving behind decades of impact in Nigerian Christian music.
Toun Soetan was widely recognized as the original composer of the beloved worship chorus “Darling Jesus,” a song that has remained a major part of worship gatherings, fellowships, and church services across Nigeria for many years.
Following news of her passing, emotional tributes immediately flooded social media as gospel ministers, church leaders, and fans reflected on her contribution to Nigerian gospel music.
Gospel comedian Woli Agba, while reacting to the news online, described her as a woman whose life consistently glorified Jesus. Other ministers also praised her for her humility, mentorship, and spiritual influence over younger gospel artists.
Beyond “Darling Jesus,” the late evangelist was also known for songs like “Ke Pe Jesu,” “Cast Your Burdens,” and “Train Up Your Child,” many of which became worship favorites in churches during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Many believers online have also used the moment to reflect on the importance of honoring gospel legends while they are still alive, noting that several younger Christians may not fully realize how much pioneers like Toun Soetan shaped Nigerian worship culture.
Before dedicating herself fully to ministry, she reportedly worked as a teacher for years and later became deeply involved in mentoring younger gospel musicians and worship leaders.
