Legendary American singer Elvis Presley, popularly known as the King of Rock and Roll, achieved worldwide fame through his music, but one remarkable part of his career was his lifelong appreciation for gospel music.

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1935, Presley grew up surrounded by Christian worship music, church hymns and gospel singing, influences that helped shape his musical development.

Although he became one of the most celebrated rock and roll performers in history, gospel music remained an important part of his personal and professional life.

Remarkably, all three of Presley’s competitive Grammy Awards were won for gospel recordings rather than the rock and roll songs that made him internationally famous.

His first Grammy came in 1967 for How Great Thou Art, followed by another in 1972 for He Touched Me.

In 1974, he received his third competitive Grammy for his live performance of How Great Thou Art.

Beyond recording gospel albums, Presley was also known for singing Christian hymns with friends, fellow musicians and members of his entourage.

These informal gospel singing sessions reportedly continued late into the night, reflecting his lasting affection for the music he had grown up hearing.

Throughout his career, Presley recorded several gospel songs, including Peace in the Valley, Crying in the Chapel and Amazing Grace.

While his public life included personal struggles and controversies, his contributions to gospel music remain an important part of his musical legacy.

Decades after his death in 1977, his gospel recordings continue to be remembered by Christian music lovers around the world.
