FROM A MUSLIM HOME TO THE CHURCH CHOIR: ADEKUNLE GOLD REVEALS WHERE HIS LOVE FOR MUSIC BEGAN

Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has shared how attending church as a child helped awaken his passion for music, despite being raised by Muslim parents.

Speaking during an interview on the One 54 Podcast, the award-winning artist described his father as a liberal man who allowed his children to attend church because he viewed religion as a form of education.

It was at church that Adekunle Gold discovered the teenagers’ choir and became fascinated by the young singers who led praise and worship every Sunday.

“I wanted to be that guy so bad,” he recalled.

However, despite spending about 11 years in the church, he was never chosen to lead the choir. Adekunle Gold admitted that he often wondered what the other boys possessed that he did not. Their confidence and ability to move the congregation inspired him to work harder during rehearsals, hoping the choir mistress would notice him.

His aunt, who was also a choir member, taught him how to sing different harmonies. Although she sometimes jokingly told him that his voice sounded annoying, his love for singing remained strong.

“I didn’t know anything. I just knew that I loved to sing. I knew that I was interested, and that drove me,” he said.

What appeared to be an overlooked childhood dream eventually became part of the foundation for an internationally recognised music career.

Sometimes, not being chosen does not mean you lack the gift. It may simply be an invitation to keep growing until your own stage appears.
