Fresh reactions have continued pouring in after the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion suspended an Anambra-based priest, Reverend Ifunaya Maduka, over allegations of staged miracles, manipulated prophecies, and deceptive ministerial practices.
According to church authorities, the priest was accused of involving individuals allegedly instructed to act as recipients of miracles and prophetic manifestations during services, presenting arranged events as genuine acts of divine power. The issue reportedly became more serious after internal evidence was reviewed by diocesan leadership.
In the suspension notice issued by the Bishop on the Niger, the church described the development as deeply troubling and inconsistent with the sacred responsibility of ordained ministry. Reverend Maduka was consequently suspended from office for six months without pay while a disciplinary panel prepares to carry out further investigations into the matter.
What has made the story trend heavily is the wider concern it raises within Nigerian Christianity. Many believers have expressed disappointment, saying the issue further damages public trust in prophetic ministry at a time when fake miracle accusations are already a sensitive topic across the country.
Others, however, have commended the Anglican Church for acting swiftly instead of covering the matter internally, arguing that transparent disciplinary action is necessary if the integrity of the church is to be preserved.
The incident has now reopened an old but serious conversation in Nigerian Christian circles about the pressure some ministers face to constantly produce visible supernatural manifestations, and whether that pressure is contributing to an unhealthy rise in performance-driven spirituality.
For many observers, this is no longer just a local church disciplinary case in Anambra. It has become another national reminder that the line between authentic ministry and manufactured spectacle is still a major issue confronting modern Christianity.
