Pope Francis turns 80 on Saturday. For most of the Catholic Church’s upper hierarchy, 80th birthdays aren’t necessarily happy. In 1970 Pope Paul VI announced that cardinals 80 and up would lose their right to vote for the next pope. Vatican officials are usually removed from all councils and congregations at age 80. These prelates might continue to work or travel, but only one octogenarian maintains significant influence in the church.
Happy Birthday. Drop your well wishes
