Introduction
My name is Ugochukwu Innocent Obi, popularly known as St. Ugochukwu. I’m a gospel music minister, songwriter, and passionate servant of God. It’s a pleasure to share my journey, experiences, and what drives my ministry with you in this exclusive interview…..
1. Can you tell us a bit about your journey into gospel music and what inspired you to start?
Life has taught me that everything is spiritual. Though I started out as a contracting professional, a preacher, and an author, I never imagined I would venture into music—let alone become a gospel artist. However, as my prayer life deepened, I discovered another side of me that sang spontaneously in tongues and eventually transitioned into intelligible languages. The songs I received were unique and unfamiliar—sounds I had never heard before. Because of the strong presence of God that accompanied them, I felt compelled to share them, believing they would positively impact the body of Christ.
2. How has your faith influenced your music and message?
There’s no true gospel music without a relationship with Jesus Christ. My walk with Christ—nurtured through the Holy Spirit—has been both the foundation and fuel for my music. Interestingly, the enemy understands this and has often attacked my prayer life. But the more I press into Christ, the more songs He releases to me.
3. What challenges have you faced as a gospel artist, and how did you overcome them?
Challenges are part of life. I’ve faced several—including breaking into the music industry, funding my projects independently, and making the right connections to reach a wider audience. I’m still on that journey. But through consistency, hard work, experience, and above all, trust in God, I’m navigating each hurdle one day at a time.
4. Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Some of the gospel artists who have greatly influenced me include Sinach, the late Osinachi Nwachukwu, Don Moen, CeCe Winans, Ebuka Songs, and others.

5. What is your songwriting process like? Do your songs come from personal experiences?
My songwriting is deeply rooted in prayer and consecration. The more I set myself apart in devotion to God, the more songs He entrusts to me. These songs often come raw, and I must then put in the effort to develop and structure them into their final form.
6. Which of your songs has had the most impact on listeners, and why do you think it resonated?
Statistically, “You Alone” has received the most streams. However, based on interviews and listener feedback, songs like “Holy One” and “Let It Flow” have also deeply resonated with audiences. It’s often hard for people to choose a favorite because each song ministers in a unique way. I encourage you to listen for yourself—and while you’re at it, don’t forget to subscribe and leave a comment!
7. How do you prepare spiritually before a performance or recording session?
Prayer is my number one preparation tool. Since prayer birthed my music, it remains the most effective way to align myself spiritually before any performance or recording.
8. Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations fans should look out for?

Absolutely. As long as I remain in Christ, I’ll continue to release new sounds. I’m currently working on a project scheduled for release between the end of July and the beginning of August 2025. Stay tuned!
9. What advice would you give to young people?
My advice is drawn from my book Establishing and Advancing Your Purpose, available on Amazon worldwide. To every young person out there: never give up on your dreams. Let consistency and dedication be the fuel driving you toward your goals. With hard work and faith, you will succeed.
