Jackie Hill Perry has spoken openly about learning to trust God while living with a life-changing medical diagnosis.
In 2025, the Bible teacher and author revealed that she had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after experiencing blurred vision, severe dehydration and dangerously high blood sugar levels while travelling for ministry.
“The shock was real,” she admitted.
The diagnosis changed much of her daily life, including the need to carefully monitor her blood sugar and manage insulin. But Perry said the experience has also shown her new expressions of God’s care through the people around her.
Reflecting on the difficult season, she wrote:
“God has and is still my help.”
Perry has also spoken more broadly about suffering, saying recent years have taught her that hardship and the goodness of God can exist at the same time.
For her, faith has not meant pretending suffering is easy.
It has meant continuing to trust God in the middle of it.
A diagnosis can change your circumstances.
But it does not have to have the final word over your identity, purpose or hope.
