Jos—CHRISTIANS from all the 19 Northern states and Abuja rose from their maiden one day delegates meeting in Jos with a unanimous decision to kill the plan to pull out of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN.
They also called on Northern governors as chief security officers of their respective states to ensure Christians in their states were not intimidated, molested or killed by religious fanatics under any guise.
A communique signed by the president of Northern CAN, Rev. Yakubu Pam and his Public Relations Ofiicer, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, also frowned at discordant tunes emanating from Christians in the region, resolving that nobody or group outside the Northern CAN Chairman or the Public Relations Officer of CAN should speak or issue a statement on behalf of Northern CAN henceforth.
The 10-point communique also condemned in its totality the recent killings and religious radicalism displayed at Zamfara College of Education by some students of Islamic faith.
“We call on government to ensure Christian students at secondary and higher institutions in the North are given full protection from any form of molestation,” the statement added.
The Northern Christians also expressed reservation over the recent visit of the United States Secretary of State to Nigeria, John Kerry, that excluded Christian leaders from meeting him, as he chose to make his first point-of-call at Sokoto to meet the Sultan and select northern governors.
The Northern CAN leaders also frowned on ongoing land grabbing in some states of the north by some persons or group bent on causing crises in the north, advising government to halt activities of these group of persons.
The Church leaders frown on cases of corruption at high and low places in the country, suggesting that those in position of authorities should use their offices to better the lot of the people of Nigeria.
They also called on unemployed youths in the North to go into farming, rather than wait endlessly for white collar jobs that were unavailable.
The Northern CAN delegates also enjoined the Federal Government to do all it could to bring lasting peace to the North East to enable IDPs return to their homes, just as it condemned in strong terms under age marriages and abductions in some parts of the north.
