U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be flown at half staff for one week in honour of country music legend Dolly Parton, following her death at the age of 80.
In a presidential proclamation issued on August 25, President Trump directed that the American flag be flown at half staff at the White House, public buildings, military installations, and U.S. diplomatic facilities around the world until sunset on September 1, 2026.
The decision comes as tributes continue to pour in for Dolly Parton, whose decades long career in music, film, business, and philanthropy made her one of America’s most recognizable cultural figures.
President Trump described her death as a tremendous loss and praised her extraordinary legacy. The White House tribute reflects the widespread recognition of Dolly Parton’s influence and contributions beyond music.
The honour has also drawn attention to her extensive philanthropic work, particularly through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, which has provided books to millions of children.
The American flag at the White House has subsequently been lowered to half staff as part of the national tribute.
The presidential proclamation will remain in effect through sunset on September 1, marking a week of national remembrance for Dolly Parton and her lasting contribution to American culture and society.
