“Leading Worship Is Not About Focusing on People, It’s About Focusing on God”
Pastor Elijah Oyelade has shared a powerful lesson for worship leaders and music ministers, reminding them that true worship is not about controlling people’s responses but about focusing on God.
The gospel minister recounted an experience at a gathering of ministers where a young minister leading worship became frustrated by the seeming lack of participation from the congregation.
In anger, he stopped the worship session and rebuked the ministers, accusing them of being distracted and unserious.
Unfortunately, the atmosphere changed. Many of the ministers felt insulted and disconnected from the worship experience.some even sat down..
After the meeting, the young pastor approached Pastor Elijah Oyelade for counsel, asking why people responded differently when he led worship.
According to Pastor Oyelade, one of the most important lessons he shared was this:
“Leading people in worship does not mean focusing on the people. You must learn to focus on God.”
He explained that worship leaders should lead with humility, use words of grace and encouragement, and avoid taking people’s reactions personally. True worship, he said, is not about forcing people to respond but about genuinely engaging with God and creating an atmosphere where others can worship willingly.
He added:
“Leading worship is beyond leading songs or commanding people to sing. It is about engaging your own heart in fellowship with the Lord.”
His message has resonated with many worship leaders online, sparking conversations about humility, grace, and what it truly means to lead others into God’s presence.
