The United Nations has expressed serious concern over reports of killings, abductions, sexual violence, forced conversions, and other abuses affecting Christians and other religious minority communities in Nigeria, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt.
According to the UN human rights office, the worsening security situation in these regions has created an environment where armed groups continue to operate with devastating consequences for civilians. The organization described the reports it has received as deeply troubling and called for urgent action to protect vulnerable communities.
The UN also highlighted the heightened risks faced by women and girls, noting reports of abductions, forced marriages, sexual violence, and forced religious conversions. In some cases, victims who resisted were reportedly threatened, punished, or subjected to further abuse.
Among the incidents referenced were reports involving the abduction of Christian women, the disappearance of girls taken from a church in Borno State, and cases of forced conversion and child marriage. The UN said these incidents form part of a broader pattern of violence affecting religious minority communities in several parts of the country.
The organization urged Nigerian authorities to take immediate steps to protect those at risk, ensure the safe return of abducted persons, investigate reported abuses, and bring perpetrators to justice. It warned that a culture of impunity could further worsen the situation if decisive action is not taken.
The development has sparked renewed calls for prayers, advocacy, and practical efforts to support affected communities. Many believers continue to pray for peace, justice, and protection for vulnerable Christians and other victims of violence across the nation.
As concerns grow, the international community is watching closely, hoping to see meaningful action that will safeguard lives and uphold the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians regardless of their faith.
