Pastor Dolapo Lawal has challenged the emphasis on wealth, good health, employment and material blessings in Christian preaching, arguing that the true message of the gospel goes far beyond financial prosperity.
Speaking during a sermon, he questioned whether churches have a meaningful message for wealthy individuals such as Bill Gates, who already possess significant financial resources.
“Does the church have a message for Bill Gates?” he asked, explaining that a gospel focused primarily on material blessings may fail to communicate the spiritual need for Jesus Christ.
He also questioned the idea that Jesus came into the world and died simply to provide people with jobs, children or financial success.
“If it was about wealth, Solomon should have been our savior,” he declared.
Pastor Lawal further challenged the belief that following God automatically guarantees material prosperity, referencing Lazarus as an example.
According to him, the gospel should speak to everyone, regardless of their financial status, and reveal a spiritual need that money and earthly possessions cannot satisfy.
His message emphasised that the purpose of the gospel should not be reduced to material benefits but should point people towards their need for Jesus Christ.
