When girls in Africa have their period, they usually miss days of school due to lack of understanding, lack of supplies and stigma.

Health, education, women’s rights, economics, sustainability — some of the most pressing issues facing the world today are linked to menstrual hygiene and women’s lack of access to basic sanitation.

Join Tonia Shodunke and team on a secondary school tour,  as she enlightens the girl child on the very essence that distinguishes and dignifies the female clan, world wide in commemoration of the International Menstrual Hygiene Day.

It was such a huge honor to shed more light to this well over 250 group of girl child from St Agnes Girls’ Secondary School, Bushenyi,  Uganda;  about mensuration, the menstrual cycle, the silence surrounding menstruation, which often leads to debilitating social stigma that negatively affects women and girls across the globe.

For a disturbingly large amount of the world’s female population, the few days a month of the menses are ‘a time of shame. ‘

For a disturbingly large amount of the world’s female population, the few days a month of the menses are ‘a time of shame. ‘
It is a normal action which millions of women across the world experience, and for Tonia Shodunke and her devout team, this day sought to remove any taboo associated with it.
After all, the body’s process which allows for the conception of children should be celebrated, surely?

Next stop…. The girl child from the Busheyi School for the Disabled Uganda, we’re not left out…. Have you ever thought about how it feels to be deaf and dumb or blind, yet not exempted from menstruation? God! The blind don’t even know what it looks like and depending on the situation, may never get to know…. this struck some chords in me!
Menstruation is a biological fact, and this day was aimed at ensuring any kind of stigma suffered regarding it is stopped – and girls are taught that this is natural and nothing to be ashamed about .
It is a basic human right that women worldwide are given the right materials to collect blood during this time, and that this material is able to be changed in total privacy and sanity.
