Apostle Emmanuel Iren has shared his perspective on the biblical story of the widow’s mite, warning against using the passage to pressure people who are already struggling financially into extreme sacrificial giving.
According to him, Jesus’ observation of the widow came immediately after He criticised religious leaders who “devour widows’ houses,” which Iren says is important context for understanding the passage.
He argued that Jesus was not simply celebrating the fact that a poor widow gave everything she had, but was also exposing a religious system in which the most vulnerable were still giving while those responsible for caring for them failed in that responsibility.
“The collection is supposed to take care of people like this. Why are they still giving so sacrificially?” he said.
Iren also cautioned against taking the message to the opposite extreme, stressing that believers should still cultivate generosity regardless of their financial level.
He referenced the Macedonian church, which gave despite poverty, and said Christians should learn faithfulness in giving even when they have little.
His message was a call for balance: encourage generosity, but never turn giving into exploitation or use Scripture to place unnecessary pressure on people already struggling to meet basic needs.
