Eight years after a moment he describes as life-changing, Jonathan Roumie is reflecting on how surrendering his future to God became a turning point in both his faith and career.
Roumie, widely known for portraying Jesus in The Chosen, recently looked back on May 2018, when he was struggling financially and unsure whether his acting career would survive.
“Eight years ago today, God changed the course of my life,” he wrote in a recent reflection.
At the time, Roumie has said he was deeply in debt, nearly out of food and struggling to find work.
After years of trying to make things happen on his own, he reached a point where he said he could no longer control the outcome.
He got on his knees and surrendered his career, finances and future to God.
“I needed to trust that God had a plan for me,” Roumie later explained.
That same day, he said he opened his mailbox and found several unexpected residual checks from previous acting work, giving him roughly $1,100 at a moment when his bank account had been overdrawn.
Roumie has described the experience as both a financial and spiritual miracle.
About three months later, he received the opportunity to play Jesus in The Chosen, a role that would dramatically change the direction of his career.
But Roumie has said the greatest change was not simply professional success.
Portraying Jesus has pushed him to reflect more deeply on Christ’s life and to depend more fully on God in his own life.
His testimony is a reminder that seasons of uncertainty can sometimes become turning points.
We may not always understand what God is doing in the moment, but surrender can open the door to a path we never expected.
