Jonathan Roumie has spent years portraying Jesus Christ in The Chosen, but he continues to make a distinction between the character he portrays on screen and the real relationship with Christ that shapes his personal life.
Speaking in a 2025 interview, Roumie explained that he talks to Jesus every day, sometimes even out loud.
“Just because I can’t see Him physically doesn’t mean I don’t have the relationship,” he said.
Roumie explained that nurturing that relationship includes reading about Jesus, listening to His words, talking to Him when he is confused and praying for his family.
Then he summed it up simply:
“It’s the most important relationship I have in my life.”
Roumie is a practicing Catholic and has also spoken publicly about the importance of Mass, Confession, Eucharistic Adoration and the Eucharist in sustaining his faith, particularly while filming some of The Chosen’s most demanding scenes.
He has previously described his work in faith-based media as an “apostolate,” saying he hopes what he does can ultimately point people beyond himself and toward Christ.
For Roumie, portraying Jesus may be the role millions know him for, but his own relationship with Jesus is something far more personal.
“It’s the most important relationship I have in my life.”
